How to get an Internet volunteer project (like Wikipedia) - i.e.local guided tours via cellphones kick started?
With the growth of mobile phones with GPS and motion sensors; and the success of publicly contributed projects such as wikipedia. I can imagine there would be a big market for local guided tours which these cell phones could address. People visiting another town or country I am sure would love to have a local guide show them round the town, take them to their favorite dining establishments, or lead them on a scenic walk in the countryside. I am sure many tourist agencies and even retired people would love to contribute. With the latest cellphones and GPS I am sure this can be done without having to be physically present or even available online at the same time yet still providing directions, going into more details on places where the user lingered and perhaps providing some simple capabilities to answer questions. With augmented reality it could even show what a historic town may have looked like 100's of years ago.
My question is how could such a project get started, do you see it picking up interest and would you use it? If so would it be with commodity hardware like today's smartphones or with specialized ones provided by a tourist agency?

  The first step is to show your commitment to the project by putting in some work yourself, then ask for help from users and the community as a whole. I haven't really messed with this much, but I know Google Maps has an ability to create custom maps. Since standard Google Maps materials are commonly incorporated into Android apps, I'd bet you could put together an app that allowed custom maps to be imported. That would be a good first step. There's no reason you'd need specialized hardware for anything. I'm not much of a guided tour type on the whole, but I might use a specialty type product (historical, ghost sightings), and I'd certainly use a community generated guide program that was able to distinguish by contributor. There are a lot of tools out there that list bars and restaurants, but not so many that will let you sort them by the crowd they attract. Knowing the type of place a specific contributor likes to hang out would let you pick the vibe a little better.

So, i've recently been infected with the "internet security 2010" virus, and i found a solution to it to make it stop running and also delete the trojans that come along with it. The false program is no longer running on my computer, and ive preformed a full scan on my computer afterwards and deleted what trojans were left

  I couldn´t help but to notice the (above) definition of non-common knowledge.
  I think that non-common knowledge can be defined as personal life experience. I mean, Knowledge that one has that isn`t necessary common to others, but is precious and usefull to him/her, in addition to knowledge that cannot be taught through lectures.
  If you think about it, the above non-common knowledge list represents (not one person but) a group of people that have that knowledge. Even if it is a mall group, those particular "non-common" knowledges are common knowledge to them.
  I don`t think we should always accept all definitions that encyclopedias trowe at us. Anyway, I am not trying to be rude. That`s what I think, though.

I know this is going to go off the rails with people who read nothing but the title but I have a few things I'd like addressed specifically.

I'm a news junkie, I bounce channels a lot, of the big 3 (I call the big 3, Fox, MSNBC and CNN) I find Fox to be as conservative as it gets. CNN to depend upon who is anchoring / who's show is on and MSNBC to be as liberal as it gets.

I've served in the military and call me crazy but I find a majority of MSNBC to be rational, down to earth and believe it or not, entertaining.
CNN seems to like to play back and forth on compassion and hard fact. Anderson Cooper seems bleeding heart while Lou Dobbs seems firm. I've seen a lot of bad things but Fox news is the only channel that actually concerns me, concerns in a sense of "Good lord, what are they thinking."

When I can't be in front of a TV I like to listen to talk radio, I get most of my news from talk radio. I don't get Air America where I am at, and I really don't know any places that do - I have streamed it a few times. Rush Limbaugh seems like he only cares about the rich. Sean Hannity seems self righteous and only cares about the conservative party. Glenn Beck seems like a pretty decent guy, libertarian with a lot of coservative policy ? Mike Savage is crazy. Mark Levin's voice is too annoying for me to listen to so I cannot comment.

But I've done some digging and the only thing I can come up with is that of these 3 news stations, The big 3 24 hour news stations, Fox News has an overwhelming control of the market. Anyone can goto wikipedia and see the plethora of businesses and companies they control.

Why is it that a media source, who obviously has control over so many different parts of the market, TV, News, Movies, Radio, Internet (Oh yes teenagers, they own MySpace) outrightly lies about who is controlling the media ?
What liberals exist on Fox News with a purpose other than to stoke the flames for the Conservative sitting in the seat across from them ?

  What you are missing is that all those cable stations together have fewer viewers than ABC, NBC and CBS news shows. THAT is where most people get their news, tv-wise. I notice you don't rate them on your "liberal to conservative" scale, and I wish you would take the time, some week, and see where you think they land.
  Likewise, in the newspaper world, the fact is, nearly every newspaper in America gets their news from the AP or the New York Times. There are not more than a dozen other papers in the country that actually develop their own stories, and of those, most still follow the NY Times' lead on what is and isn't news. Both the AP and the NY Times are just off the hook liberal, both in WHAT they cover, and in how much they editorialize in their so-called "reporting".

The founders of this company who chose this name were Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman. They chose this name as a symbol of good luck and hope of victory for sportsmen who wore this brand and propagate the symbol of this god.

With regard to words written on garments, such as “I am a Christian” on a sweater, or “I am a Jew” or “Christian” or “sexual fluid” or “the gushing water of man” or writing the symbol for Venus, which is a symbol for immoral actions, and also writing “the ancient Greek god of love” or “alcoholic drink” or the name of a man and woman, or “Christmas” – all of these are unacceptable.

What matters is that we are a Muslim people, and what we must do is boycott these clothes. We should also write to the Ministry of Trade, reminding them to fear Allaah, and tell them: You must be very careful about such things that are imported to our market.

Subhan Allaah, a Muslim boy or girl with the words “I am a Christian” or “I am a Jew” written on their clothes! Don’t we understand? Are we sheep? Subhaan Allaah, we should be one ummah. If the people in charge are heedless of this and are unaware of it, we should write to them and point it out and send examples of these clothes. That has to do with those who are in charge. What we must do is boycott these things completely, and if we see that a shopkeeper is selling them, we should advise him and tell him to fear Allaah, and draw his attention to it, because some shopkeepers do not know English and do not know what the writing says. But we should tell them. Allaah is sufficient against those who wrote it and deceived the people with it.
Even the names of singers and soccer (football) stars and others who are not Muslim – all of that is not permissible, because it will lead to the Muslim venerating these people, who are kaafirs.

Sorry Westhill. I forgot to address your question. McCain is sort of in the middle. He's not completely liked by Democrats or Republicans. His bill did not get the support necessary to get out of committee from either side.

I understand why Lieberman, an Independent, likes McCain and has thrown his support to McCain even though he caucuses with Democrats. McCain, although Republican, behaves like an Independent when making decisions for America. His first concern is "What's Best for My Country."

  3D might not become common because of the need for eyeframes but I think we will have it solved or probably create a new technology behind this altogether.

  Organic LED would now be use revolutionizing TV screens and monitors plus it would be less expensive.

  Companies would still continue to use Blu ray seeing that they invested a huge amount of money converting old movies into this new technology. What's next though I believe are holographic discs. For those of you who dont like reading...I'll summarize. Male protagonist gets a job teaching a class of 3rd graders (its in Japan...but their age indicates they'd be 3rd Graders in the West) in this story. In his class there is one relatively promiscuous little girl who has a crush on him. She happens to have a rather developed knowledge of things involving sex for her age, hence she uses her knowledge in an attempt to seduce him...the protagonist is rigtfully TERRIFIED of the girl's flirts...both because relationships between teacher and students will get him fired, AND since she's underage, will get him arrested.
Most of the humor and drama of this series basically works from that premise.

As an avid fan of that series, I'm probably biased towards this. So I was quite excited when Seven Seas Entertainment licensed this series and decided to translate and market this series to the West. But the Media Watch dogs and Though polices all over the internet jumped at this series, attacking it as some sort of "PEDOPHILIC KIDDIE PORN COMIC" or something like that....
The worse part?? The Watchdogs, and Conservatives angrily complaining about this series DID NOT ONCE LOOK at what this series really is!! The most knowledge they have of this series is from either A)they saw a single scan, or B)heresay...and as the result of the controversy, Seven Seas dropped the title, forever dooming any chances this series may have in the West...

I have TWO questions regarding this series actually...

1. How come the watch dogs and other people whining about this series NEVER read 3 or so chapters of this series first BEFORE RAISING such unneeded controversy?? Everyone I've seen yelling bloody murder at this series did so without truly knowing what it's about!!

@Joel, the 3rd party offerings I am talking about that apple actively block include: Flash, Java, and anything that competes with software they write, such as any type of browser, email or calendar program.

I'm also pretty sure the T&Cs allow them to block any app, for any reason they like.

They have a monopoly in that they're the only ones who can sell iPhone OS, but there's never been any suggestion that it should be separated from the hardware and licensed to other manufacturers.

  Apple would argue that anyone is free to write Web applications for the iPhone, and there are no restrictions on this at all. The App Store is a bit more of a grey area, but it probably wouldn't seem unreasonable to the legal system that they would filter things for objectionable content or for quality control, if it is done so in a reasonable manner.

  What 3rd party offerings and competing technologies are you talking about? The only thing I can think of that comes close to this is when the Google Voice app was blocked by Apple, and this was successfully reimplemented as a Web application. Hello guys, I have a question regarding measuring total amount of downloading when I am using the internet. I pay for a package where the download capacity is limited to two GB per month, though I hardly download about 300 MB per month for my job purpose as I work as a medical transcriptionist but I use the net throughout my working hours as I need a lot of information from internet for my job purpose, though mainly I use the Google search engine to find those information, I also open a site wikipedia or other for infomation every now and then. My questions are that, is google search is taken for downloading and if so, how many KB per search? Is opening a website is taken for downloading, if so, how many KB for each website opening. If I watch something on youtube, will that be counted as downloading and if so, how many KB or MB grossly for every 10-minute video for calcultion. If I use a website which updates itself automatically every 15 seconds (like the websites which provide live stock market charts, price, etc.), how many KB or MB downloading will be counted for that. I regularly transfer files through either email or a particular website. Will that uploading also be taken for downloading while using the net and if so how is that calculated? I have already asked so many people regarding this but none has come up with a satisfactory and accurate answer. One information has always differed form other. I will be really grateful to you guys for your authentic information.

If you use Firefox, FirefoxThrottle will tell you. Just download and install it from my link. Then right-click on the speed gauge on the bottom right and click "Show traffic counters". You will then see traffic indicators on the bottom right.

In legal terms, it means that California has taken back the idea of a tradition marriage. If not pulled immediately, this proposition will defy the American philosophy of equality, impose on and danger the lives of homosexuals, and market a terrible influence for children.

Sadly, there are twice as many pages on 'inequality'. And it got me thinking. So, I trashed my previous paragraph on freedom because it was full of the teenage preacher that lives through my opinions. Same-sex marriage may not be traditional, but the world needs change. The world thrives on change. If the world stayed the same since the day it was born, African American's would still be enslaved by white folk, women would be enslaved my legislature, and everybody would be enslaved my war. And without freedom or change, those college kids wouldn't have the guts to post their opinion on the internet. Just like, without freedom, gay citizens do not have the right to marry. Where is the world headed when we can't accept gay people and their hearts direction? Inequality is a dangerous thing. Take away a persons right to wed, and they become an unequal member of society. The respect for them is lowered, and they are seen as a minorty. Where is the equality in that? The only defect the government of California sees in these people are the people they choose to love.

  Your essay isn't persuasive. In order to write a persuasive essay you need to take a specific side of an issue (for example: they should teach sex education to 7th graders), support your main argument for it with facts (50% of people are sexually active by that age), bring up the points against you (parents don't want their kids to know about sex), and then resolve those issues (kids are doing it anyways, its better to be safe). You need to rely on logic not emotion.

Will the internet bring more women home and increase the birth-rate? Will immigration nations (e.g Mexico) soon become nations desperately holding on to their work force? Will most nations with the highest birth rates and often most unstable political regime...be a reasonable replacement in all the nations that are industrially prosperous or is there a better way forward? What are the implications on programs (e.g social security and medicare) when there no-longer is an equally productive workforce to supplement such? What do you expect to happen...?

1980s Devil Food Cookies: I Just Know My Brother Has Got it Wrong.?
So, when I was a teenager and my little brother was a kid (we're 6 years apart), we used to come home from school, sit on our parents' bed, and watch cartoons while eating our afternoon snack. The cartoons: Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, and He-Man. The snack: devil's food cookies. You know: chocolate cake inside, wrapped in marshmallow and then a layer of chocolate? Mmmmmmmm...

Here's the beef: I remember this now-defunct brand of cookies that came in a long, brown box. The cookies themselves were rectangular (well, close enough - they had rounded edges)... maybe the size and shape of a pretty small cellphone nowadays (but not as thick) or a playing card (but slightly smaller). They often had little bubbles on the underside, which was slightly convex.

Little bro thinks I'm out of my mind, because he remembers our favorite childhood cookies as being circular. Iiiiii think he's just confused, because the only devil's food cookies on the market today are SnackWells, which look ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME (except that they're round):

Very recently I attended an introductory seminar conducted by a prominent Internet business promoter with a very good reputation, and I signed up for a retail website through which I will market various products. The import flood was another blow to an industry already hurting from the low-carb diet craze and a slowdown in the expansion of fast-food restaurant chains, which sell about 90% of the fries consumed in the U.S.

"The last several years have been very brutal for growers in the fresh market," said Paul Patterson, an agricultural economist at the University of Idaho. The government aid, called trade adjustment assistance, would have no affect on current potato prices, he said.

Trade adjustment assistance, long available to manufacturers hurt by foreign competition, was expanded by Congress to include farmers in 2002. It allows producers to receive up to ,000 in cash as well as technical and marketing training if they can demonstrate to the Department of Agriculture's satisfaction that foreign countries hurt domestic prices. Petitions are made by individual states.

Idaho growers who sell potatoes in the fresh market have 90 days starting today to apply at their county's Farm Service Agency to participate in the program.

Once growers are approved for the assistance, they can receive cash benefits based on their production, according to Dennis Fiess, a trade adjustment assistance specialist at Washington State University. The payment comes to 3.5 cents per hundred pounds of potatoes, and Idaho's Farm Service Agency expects the estimated 285 eligible farmers to collect a total of roughly million. There were 818 potato farms in Idaho in 2002, according to the Idaho Agricultural Statistics Office.

Idaho produced 12.3 billion pounds of potatoes in 2003, down from 13.3 billion in 2002. Production rebounded to 13.2 billion pounds in 2004.

Agriculture experts and Idaho growers said imports of processed French fries from Canada surged 24% to 1.72 billion pounds in 2003, displacing 670 million pounds of Idaho potatoes. The fresh potato price dropped to 3.85 cents per pound in the 2003 season, from the five-year average price of 4.9 cents per pound

The government program's cash benefits will soften the blow of the French fry imports, but in terms of the overall cost for farmers it may not help much, Idaho farmers say. "It's a drop in the bucket for any average potato farmer's cost," said Keith Esplin, executive director of the Blackfoot, Idaho-based Potato Growers of Idaho, who brought the petition. "It won't anywhere near begin to make up for his losses."

Mr. Fiess will be working with Foreign Agricultural Service and Idaho farmers to come up with "shotgun" business training for the farmers. It will include workshops, some available over the Internet, on such basic business-management skills as using a balance sheet and cash-flow statement.

"We're not going to provide them with an M.B.A.," said Mr. Fiess. "It's more of an overview."

I received 2 poorly written manuals (these manuals appear to contain plagerized materials--no notations or credits given to anyone & no copy right on manuals), attended 2 webinars, & two 2-day seminars on said subjects. The instructors on the webinars promised notes to be emailed to the students within a day or two. Instead, it took a week+ & seminars were worse! I found everything ISI had charged me for was available on-line or via other sources for free! ISI would not refund my money when asked!

Career in Music - What Should I Do?
So, I'm 19 *soon to be 20*, graduated high school almost 2 years ago, and, I'm still torn about what to do with myself. When I graduated I had no direction, absolutely no direction lol. I tried my hands at all kinds of things, but ended up quitting. Not out of depression or "oh I suck at this blah blah blah", but just because I get bored. I'm the type of person that gets very bored and restless if I don't have something to do........except when I was working at my last job, and when I play my music.

My last job was awesome, pretty much was with an internet marketing/consulting/advertising companies. 2 of them at once in fact (working with my direct boss, and then helping him out with his biggest account as pretty much the "assist consultant" or "secondary consultant"). It wasn't your typical white collar, desk-jockey, type job. That type of job, where I'm just pushin paper/pencil would kill me, I'm way to restless. But with this past job, I got to be creative, I got to use my ideas, I got to edit/make videos, websites, pictures, etc. And I got my training for free. BUT, unfortunately, due to the economy, the business has taken a hit. Boss said he can't afford to pay me right now, and didn't want to have me working for free lol, but that I'd most likely be able to come back in a couple months. So, more like laid-off than fired.

Now on to my music. I play flamenco guitar. I play everyday and I can honestly say that it's the one and only thing that truly makes me happy. It's my release. I would absolutely LOVE to make a career out of it, but it's music, much easier said than done. And considering it's also flamenco, considering most people probably think about the bird (flamingo) when they see the word, it's not exactly all that main-stream.

Lately I've been very lost, very very lost. I've tried my hand at a few things, and quit all of them. College........psh, yea right. I'm not lazy, not lazy at all, trust me, the responsibility of my last job was enormous. It's just, college isn't right for everybody, some people just aren't meant to go, and I happen to be one of those people. What can I say? I tried, only lasted a year then I decided that I couldn't keep doing it. And some more things here and there I don't want to elaborate on, and make this any longer than it already is.

Anyway, on to my question (sorry for rambling), when it comes down to it, the only 2 things I haven't quit are: my job, and flamenco.

The reason why I keep trying my hand at other things and not just sticking with music and the job that I have/had, is that it's free-lance. Times are good, times are bad. Music is artistic, and the web-job is free-lance. Basically, it's not something I'm guaranteed to always have (if that makes sense). And I'm a person that grew up with VERY little stability in my life, so the thought of living the rest of my life like that......just the thought of it stressed the hell outta me. But still, those are the only 2 things I haven't quit.

So, finally, my question is: What just sticking with my gut and do music and the internet-marketing job (when I get it back, or even finding clients of my own), or should I keep searching for something else?

Just trying to get some other people's (aside from family/friends) view, you know, people who don't really know me, kind of an objective point of view.

i know you would say that am disappointed, depressed, pessimistic person. But no dears am not.
i'v been through many hard situation in my life since my teenager period with a lonely childhood. but i was always searching for better, never let my self down, looking to the positive side of life, seeking knowledge and learning, enhance my skills and abilities towards better and better, care about people around i don't have the ability to say No to anyone if he/she needs anything i can do, and having this hope to achieve my dreams.
In my lonely teenager (no friends, no family support, no lovers), i never lost this hope of being better person. i remember that i used to motivate myself i had that faith of better tomorrow, full of hard work and success in most aspects of my life. years later although my efforts but it was effortless.
Now am 28y, holding a master degree of international business administration with high grads, smart, creative, dedicate to work, SURPRISING with no job...!!! probably you have say "search for job immediately" .. i started my career during college in order to be ready for the real market, and most probably got the job of my dream.. but things didn't go well.
i was graduated (with high grads, some experience and good courses) but hardly found a job.. it was very bad to the point they told me u r over qualified, but with pleasure i took it. i swear i worked hard to achieve any satisfied results but after a while company closed. i set at home LONELY doing nothing, with ZERO achievement. after a few months i found a great position (suits my qualifications and my personality). it was really a great company as i took my training in the HQ out side my country as i was from the opening team in my company.

  you have a really good thesis and beginning paragraph. usually you want to try to refrain from using you in a formal essay as well as using the MLA way to cite sources. like instead of saying what website the information comes from you'd actually use the author's name. you can lead it in like you did or say the information and put their last name in parentheses after the sentence. oh and humor is good, as long as its not obvious and sarcastic like, "and he is, guess what, a computer scientist!"
